A Former Colonial Capital in the Valley
Founded in 1540 as Villa de Santiago de Galicia de Compostela and named for the Spanish pilgrimage city, Compostela served as the seat of government for the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia from 1540 to 1560, before the capital moved on to Guadalajara. Cobblestone streets and the regional museum recall the decades when this valley anchored Spain’s northern frontier.
Today the municipality stretches from these farm fields all the way to the coast — Rincón de Guayabitos, La Peñita and Lo de Marcos all belong to it. Ranchos and town homes here share the same economics as the beach towns: modest consumption, a low Tarifa 1A DAC threshold of 300 kWh a month, and long sunny spells between winter fronts.
